August 1, 2007

The day before kickoff, Noelle Ferdon (an organizer for Food and Water Watch) and I visited King’s Road Park and did last minute errands and tasks (picking up stuff for the event, putting out postcards, etc). We also felt it important to capture the atmosphere of the event by getting a photo of the Hollywood sign to post up for you all.

So we drove, and we drove, and we drove. Finding the Hollywood sign isn’t as easy as you think. We figured going toward Hollywood would be the wisest thing to do (well, actually asking someone how to see the sign would probably have been the smartest….), but we headed up Sunset and turned left on La Brea or Highland or something like that. Noelle glimpses the sign so we speed off in the direction of what she’d seen but couldn’t glimpse it again. Before we knew it, we’d somehow driven onto the 101 Freeway and found ourselves at Universal City. We turned back around, rushed back through the traffic and ended up somewhere on the side of the road where Noelle snapped the photo.

Later that evening, we put together gift bags for our guests at the launch event. In the bags, we included the usual Sustainable Table and Food and Water Watch brochures, Eat Well Guide magnets, Meatrix DVDs and bumperstickers, pooping cow or pig key chains, and we were also able to give away a DVD of An Inconvenient Truth (courtesy of our friends at Participant Productions), a sample of Bob's Red Mill cereal (from Bob’s Red Mill), Organic Valley Earth Dinner cards (courtesy of Organic Valley), samples of Solstice Café’s goji bars (from the Solstice Café in Oregon), and Farm Aid booklets. I think I just might keep one of the bags for myself.

We must give a huge thank to everyone who donated something to the bags – it made our event even that much more special!
