Tilden Park- Berkeley, CA by Diane

Tilden Park- Berkeley, CA

August 4, 2007

I can’t do Tilden Park justice, so Noelle will be able to fill you in on details. If you’re wondering who Noelle is, she’s our California tour organizer and works for Food and Water Watch. Three Slow Food groups - Slow Food Berkeley, Slow Food Bella Berkeley, and Slow Food Aqua Terra hosted the picnic which featured an heritage pig roasted in a box. Okay, that doesn’t quite do it justice, but they used these funky boxes to slow cook the pig which made for a succulent taste.

About 75 people came to the picnic and each brought a dish made from local ingredients to share. The food was obviously the highlight of the event, along with all the great people we met, but Wenonah and Noelle did another rousing talk and raffle.

What I took away from the event is that no matter a person’s age or background, food is a common denominator that brings us all together. I’ve always thought this and known it intellectually, but as we’re traveling to places, I’m really understanding how food keeps us alive in more ways than one. I had in-depth conversations with people I’ll never see again and realized that wasn’t what was important – what was important was simply the connection in that moment. If we could all keep that connection with each other, or find that connection in everything we do, the world would be a better place. And, who knows, maybe the sustainable food movement will end up changing the world in more ways than we realize. Let’s at least hope so.
