News

Fast Food Nation and The Eat Well Guide
The Fast Food Nation movie released on November 17 – to much critical praise!  We are thrilled to have The Eat Well Guide be a part of Participant Productions’ social action campaign surrounding the movie. (You might remember Participant from their production of An Inconvenient Truth and Syriana, among others.) Each Participant film has its own social action campaign that provides people with specific actions they can take to get active in their communities.  The Eat Well Guide is the very first action as part of the Fast Food Nation campaign! You can check out the Fast Food Nation social action campaign highlighting The Eat Well Guide at www.participate.net/fastfoodnation.

Holiday Recipes and Videos

Sustainable Kitchen
As part of the Sustainable Table re-launch, we’ve enhanced the Sustainable Kitchen section of our site.  We’ve added more recipes, including new ones for the holidays!  We’re constantly adding new recipes – so visit often for more ways to cook sustainably.  When you’ve tried the recipes out, please come back and review them!

If you have a favorite recipe (or two, or more!) that you've created and would like to share with us, please send it to us at info@sustainabletable.org.  We'll post it on our recipes page, give you full credit, and we may even use your recipe to promote Sustainable Table in the media.   If you send 5 original recipes or more, we'll send you a limited-edition Meatrix coffee mug as a thank you!

Harvest Eating with Chef Keith Snow
Want to eat seasonally and sustainably, but need help from a professional?  Chef Keith Snow shows us healthy recipes and cooking techniques in his Harvest Eating video series.  Chef Snow combines seasonal produce with other fresh ingredients (sustainably raised beef, poultry, fish, pork, eggs, and dairy) to create healthy, sustainable menu choices.  Get in tune with local growing seasons and learn how to cook like a professional chef!  The principles of Harvest Eating are based upon the preparation and enjoyment of seasonal foods. It's about the enjoyment that comes from shopping for the right foods in places with more character and community than your average grocery store. It's about wowing your friends and family - and then sharing your secrets - as you prepare those foods with the skill of a professional chef.

In his latest video series, Chef Snow shows us how to cook delicious, sustainable, seasonal food that is perfect for the holidays, or anytime!  Watch how to make Mashed Yukon Gold Potatoes, Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Au Gratin Potatoes, Cauliflower with Mornay Sauce, Cranberry Sauce, Brussels Sprout Gratin, Sage-Rubbed Turkey, and more!  Chef Snow provides cooking tips and techniques throughout his videos.

And…you are invited to join Chef Snow’s Harvest Eating website – for free!  Harvest Eating and Sustainable Table have set up a special page which will allow you to register (free!) to access content on the Harvest Eating website.  This includes all seasonal cooking videos, recipes, articles and more.

National Hold-the-Hormones Starbucks Call-in Day
On Tuesday, December 5th, tell Starbucks to buy better milk!  Let Starbucks know that you object to its continued use of milk produced with artificial growth hormones.

FWW

Injecting cows with artificial growth hormone (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone, or rBGH), harms cows and may harm people. Cows “treated” with this hormone can get more infections, which can lead to more antibiotic use. Overuse of antibiotics in animal production creates antibiotic resistant bacteria, a serious threat to people. Additionally, there is a potential link between rBGH and higher risk of breast, prostate, and colon cancer. Starbucks promotes itself as a socially responsible company and, with more than 6,000 stores nation wide, buys a lot of milk. If Starbucks makes the switch to rBGH-free milk, it will send a strong message to the dairy industry about consumers’ distaste for recombinant bovine growth hormone.

Call Starbucks at 1(800) 235-2883 on December 5th!  Read more about the National Hold-the-Hormones Starbucks Call-in Day at Food and Water Watch.

Read the Sustainable Table Issues Pages about artificial hormones and antibiotic resistance to learn more.

Internship Opportunities
Eat Well Guide Internship/Externship - Telecommute from Any College Campus in the United States or Canada

Sustainable Table is seeking college interns/externs throughout the United States and Canada who are interested in food issues and would like to increase their research and marketing skills by helping expand the Eat Well Guide, an online directory of sustainable food sources. While most experiences will revolve around updating and promoting the Guide, this is an awesome opportunity for interns with a passion for food and health to learn about new media and explore creative marketing ideas.

Eat Well Guide interns/externs will telecommute from their home or campus to help bring exposure to small farmers, retailers, and chefs who are committed to providing wholesome food from healthy animals. In the process, interns will gain an exceptional view into the rapidly increasing sustainable food movement and interact with fascinating people from all across the U.S. and Canada. Eat Well Guide

Opportunities to get involved in other facets of Sustainable Table's projects may also become available for interns, including outreach and promotional activities for The Meatrix, and helping with research for our websites.

Interested students should be organized, detail oriented, conversant in writing and on the telephone, and enjoy working independently as well as with others. Other qualifications: College/graduate students who can commit to a minimum of 10 hours/week for at least three months. Hours are flexible, but regularity is important. Our internship is unpaid (credit only), and we will work with your college to establish the internship and report on your progress. How to Apply: Please email a cover letter, writing sample, and resume to info@eatwellguide.org or fax to (212) 726-9160. In either case, please reference "Eat Well Guide Internship".
